The UAE is one of the most attractive destinations for expatriates looking to live and work in a thriving economy with world-class infrastructure. Whether you’re moving for a job, starting a business, or bringing your family to live with you, obtaining a UAE residence visa is an essential step. This guide will walk you through the process of securing a residence visa for yourself and your family members.
1. Types of UAE Residence Visas
There are several types of residence visas available in the UAE, including:
Employment Visa – Sponsored by an employer for individuals working in the UAE.
Investor Visa – For entrepreneurs and investors starting a business in the UAE.
Freelance Visa – For self-employed professionals working in various sectors.
Family Visa – Sponsored by a resident to bring their spouse, children, or parents.
Retirement Visa – For individuals aged 55 and above meeting specific financial requirements.
2. Steps to Obtain a UAE Residence Visa
Step 1: Entry Permit Application
Before applying for a residence visa, an entry permit is required. This is typically arranged by the employer, a business setup consultant, or a sponsor (for family members). The entry permit is issued by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) and allows the holder to enter the UAE for visa stamping.
Step 2: Medical Fitness Test
All residence visa applicants aged 18 and above must undergo a medical fitness test at a government-approved medical center. The test includes:
A blood test to check for infectious diseases.
A chest X-ray for tuberculosis screening.
Step 3: Emirates ID Application
The Emirates ID is a mandatory identification card for all UAE residents. It is issued by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICP). The applicant must visit an Emirates ID center for fingerprint scanning and biometric registration.
Step 4: Health Insurance Requirement
Health insurance is mandatory in the UAE. In Abu Dhabi and Dubai, employers are required to provide health insurance for employees. For family members, the sponsor must arrange private health insurance as per government regulations.
Step 5: Visa Stamping in Passport
Once the medical test and Emirates ID application are complete, the residence visa is stamped in the applicant’s passport. The validity of the visa depends on the type issued (1, 2, 3, or 10 years). After stamping, the applicant is officially a UAE resident.
3. Sponsoring Family Members for a Residence Visa
Eligibility to Sponsor Family Members
A UAE resident can sponsor their spouse, children, and parents if they meet the following conditions:
A minimum monthly salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 + accommodation.
A valid residence visa.
Adequate accommodation and medical insurance for family members.
Required Documents for Family Sponsorship
To sponsor family members, the following documents are required:
Sponsor’s valid Emirates ID and residence visa copy.
Family member’s passport copy.
Marriage certificate (attested).
Birth certificates for children (attested).
Ejari or tenancy contract (for proof of accommodation).
Salary certificate or labor contract.
Family Visa Process
Apply for an entry permit for family members.
Complete medical fitness tests for dependents (above 18 years old).
Apply for Emirates ID and health insurance.
Get the residence visa stamped in their passports.
4. Renewing a UAE Residence Visa
A UAE residence visa is valid for 1 to 10 years, depending on the type. Before expiration, residents must renew their visas to maintain legal status. The renewal process includes:
Medical fitness test (for applicants above 18 years old).
Emirates ID renewal.
Updated health insurance policy.
Passport with at least six months’ validity.
5. Overstaying and Grace Period
After a residence visa expires, the UAE provides a 30-day grace period to renew or exit the country. Overstaying beyond the grace period results in fines of AED 50 per day.
